Get to know the Council Member Naman Panwar
With over five years of experience in revenue management, I have had the privilege of working with the Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL). In my most recent role, I served as a Revenue Manager for a 287-key hotel in Mumbai, India. I am also grateful for being awarded a scholarship from IHCL, which enabled me to pursue masters at Essec Business School in Paris.
Q: Why did you choose to study Hospitality Management?
It started with the amazing stories my grandfather shared from his time at The Taj Mahal Palace and Tower in Mumbai, India—the most iconic hotel in the country during my childhood. His vivid tales painted a picture of warmth, impeccable service, and unforgettable moments. These childhood experiences inspired me to pursue Hospitality Management, fueled by a heartfelt desire to create similar magical moments for others in the world of hospitality.
Q: Why are you passionate about hospitality? What makes this industry unique?
I’m passionate about hospitality because it’s more than just a service – it’s about creating moments that people cherish. What makes this industry unique is the genuine connection it fosters. From a warm welcome to personal attention, it’s about making individuals feel special and cared for. Hospitality allows for creativity, empathy, and a constant pursuit of excellence in bringing joy to guests. The human touch and the constant drive for innovation make this field incredibly fulfilling and exciting.
Q: What are the biggest challenges as a student in hospitality?
As a hospitality student, the primary challenge lies in bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world practicalities. Balancing coursework with gaining hands-on experience is crucial. Navigating the transition from theory to practical application poses a unique set of challenges, requiring adaptability and a keen understanding of the dynamic nature of the industry
Q: The hospitality industry – as many others – faces the challenge of attracting and retaining talent. Do you have any thoughts on this that you would like to share with us?
I’ve always stood by this belief: “Take care of your employees, and they’ll take care of the business.” In the hospitality industry, keeping good people is more than a challenge; it’s the heart of success. When you invest in your employees, creating an environment where they feel valued and supported, it’s a win-win. Not only does it boost the work culture, but it also translates into better guest experiences and overall success for the business. Celebrating achievements, nurturing growth, and fostering a caring workplace – that’s the secret I believe to have a dedicated and thriving team.
Q: Why did you decide to join the HSMAI Europe Student Council?
I believed HSMAI to be an excellent platform for like-minded individuals to discuss and learn about industry trends and future developments. Joining HSMAI during my time at Essec enables me to gain both the industry and college perspectives, keeping me informed and relevant with the latest trends and information in the hospitality sector. Additionally, being my first time in Europe, it provides a unique opportunity to gain insights into the European market, enhancing my understanding of the regional dynamics within the industry. It’s a valuable chance to connect with peers, share insights, and stay at the forefront of industry advancements while adapting to a new market.
Q: How is HSMAI Europe Student Council is helping your studies/students?
The HSMAI Europe Student Council has been a game-changer for me. Beyond the classroom, it offers real-world insights into industry trends, connects me with professionals, and bridges the gap between theory and practice. The mentorship and exposure to the European hospitality market have made my learning experience truly dynamic and relevant.
Q: What is your dream job when you graduate?
My aspiration is to step into the role of General Manager, leveraging my commercial acumen from past experiences and operational insights gained during my internship in London. Having navigated diverse markets in Europe and Asia, I believe my unique perspective can contribute fresh insights. With a passion for connecting with people and a dedicated focus on achieving targets, I see the General Manager position as an exciting avenue for personal and professional growth.
